So there you have it, ten great games that turn ten this year. I for one look forward to seeing the new Gears game currently being developed for the Xbox One. Okami Pros and Cons: Wii Version VS PS2 Version DOOMhouse 14 years ago 1 I can purchase this game on either platform, but Im rather confused as of what was changed between the two versions. It’s a testament to the series that, a decade on, the Gears of War franchise is still very much alive. Dying in a match was permanent, and so players were encouraged to stick together and use tactics to out-gun and outmaneuver the enemy team. Not only could you and a friend play through the entire story in local or online co-op, but the game also featured online multiplayer that pitted teams against each other. There’s no power armor or plasma rifles to be found here and the developers took inspiration from the Vietnam war and WWII rather than from sci-fi movies.Īs good as Gears of War’s campaign was, it was ultimately the multiplayer that really gave the game its lasting appeal. Gears of War was distinct in its style in that while it was a essentially a sci-fi shooter, it had a very grounded feeling. Gears of War told the story of the Earth like planet Sera and its inhabitants, who are fighting a losing war against the monstrous creatures known as the Locust, who seek to destroy humanity. The game received a great response from fans and although the game’s servers shut down in 2010, players can online using Virtual Private Network programs.įor many gamers, it was Gears of War that really showed off what the new-gen consoles were made of. Console RTS games can often be a challenge given their lack of controls compared to a PC, but this game did an excellent job of making things simple for players who would be using controllers. The RTS mechanics were very solid and allowed players to feel in control as they commanded vast armies. It wasn’t just the Lord of the Rings themed aspects of the game that were great. The game also featured an online mode which allowed players to wage war against one another across iconic locations from The Lord of the Rings. The game features two campaign modes, one which allows you to play as the forces of good, and another which puts players in command of the forces of evil. It was total garbage.Released first on the PC, and then on the Xbox 360 a few months later, BFME2 was the hotly anticipated sequel to the first Battle for Middle-earth game which went down extremely well with real-time strategy fans and Tolkien nerds alike. At one point, we were so far off-track that it had turned into a simulation game - you had hexes and trees sprouted on them. “I was grinding my teeth at night, I was so worried. “Our first test run was incredibly boring to play,” he recalled. ![]() “I couldn’t say ‘I don’t know if this’ll be fun or not’ because than nobody on the dev team would be enthusiastic about it, so instead I was like ‘This is gonna be great! I know it will!’ So eventually the discussion shifted to a wolf running around, and we made this minute-long video depicting a wolf running through a field and trees sprouting up behind him and I told the team ‘See, isn’t that neat?'”Įventually Okami made it to the prototyping stage, but Kamiya’s problems didn’t end there. “When I first started talking about it with Inaba, the only starting point we had for Okami was a game that depicted a lot of nature,” he said. – Īlso, on 1UP we can read an interview with Kamiya that talks about the early prototype of Okami: You can play a video clip of Amaterasu in her original realistic style after beating the game. ![]() This change did not increase the game’s performance. However, Clover Studios determined that the more colorful sumi-e style allowed them to better convey Amaterasu’s association with nature and the task of restoring it. The game was originally planned to be rendered in a more photorealistic 3D style. Okami in its beta version was much different from the final one.
